Yes, we were very proud of you Hope! You achieved so many great things last year... go for gold this year too! I like that you are adding more detail to your writing Hope. Keep this up.
It was a year ago when i first saw a plate with vegetables on it. As soon as i looked at it, i felt the the fear in my body, my hand were shaking and my legs wobbled i felt like a tower that was going to collapse.
A piece of broccoli. I picked it up and i put it in my mouth. I felt like puking, i was going to give up but my determination to eating all of my vegetables took over. so i took a deep breath, held my nose and ate all of my veges.
Malo Anita, great to see you using more of the 6senses to give detail to your writing. Gives me a clear picture of how you were feeling. I also liked your simile too.
When i was a year 7 my worst subject was maths. When ever we do maths i was always quiet in my group. When we're finished sharing our ideas,My group says Fasia your your'e sharing.I get so upset,so i get up and i'm starting to tremble like i'm going to die.I knew I was struggling but i had the courage from Mrs Lokeni to preserver. When ever we do our maths i get excited. when Mrs Lokeni give my report i got an A on my maths.
When you have a goal and more importantly a desire to achieve it, well then never give up,no matter what. Those are the words that i hear in my head thousands of times since i was at a young age. Growing up in a sporty family, I was forced to do a lot of cross country . I was so desperate to prove to my family and friends wrong. But then they ended up being right. Because these words 'never give up' were ringing in my head like a bell. I didn't give up and soon i developed my own way of enjoying cross country. I ended up doing a lot of running at home. All those times in my life i was encouraged by my family paid off. The biggest part wasn't them saying i could do it. It was me saying to myself not to give up. I ran that day because i held onto my passion and because i had so much determination.
Not long ago my family had a meeting for the funeral of our lovely grand-mother. Bu-bu-du-du. It time to bury my lovely grand-mother. I couldn't stop the tears from falling down, having had my grand-mother burial. My uncle and my aunty cooked that yucky food called chowmein. There's a forest of vegetables in it.My uncle gave me a plate filled with , and he said,'You better finish those veges'.Arrrrrgggghhhh. ‘I don't eat vegetables'. I need to tell my uncle that this food is so yuck, but I can't. So I decided I wouldn't let him down so he wouldn't scream at me, 'why don't you eat vegetables?' So what I do I do? I try my best to eat it, I never give up, I try harder. You know what happened next??yayyyy... I finish all my veges. BY:JOHN CRICHTON
Malo John, you used a really descriptive metaphor - "forest of vegetables". This metaphor really gave me a clear picture as to what your chowmein looked like. Fantastic metaphor!! I bet your body is thanking you for the forest of veges you ate :)
It was the summer of 2016 on a Sunday but it wasn't just any ordinary Sunday it was a Sunday that you, yes, you, had to sing, dance, and say bible verses. It all started when I woke up on that day then my parents reminded me it was lotutamaiti dun Dun DUN!!!!. Lotu tamaiti was a day we all yes all celebrated his little creations children. My parents said to get up and get ready. I begged yes begged and also screamed like my head was going to fall off, for my surprise they said NO!!!!. Once we got in the car my stomach started to ache like it was going to blow up, it also felt like there were a bunch a bugs eating my stomach. After all those twist, breaks, and turns we got out of the car and started to go inside the church. Once we got there we found our seats and watched the plays, dance, and songs that they did. Once I saw every item that they performed I was blown away. The items were brilliant, fantastic, and totally tubular. After all the other acts it was time for our family to perform. Once I said our tauloto all my fear and tears came to bite my head off. As I was singing I started to wobble like I was going to collapse like a destroyed building, my voice sound like a dying cat and I was to persisted to do our item. Once we finished we drove through the traffic so we can go to my dads church. Once we took a long break at my dad’s church the bugs came back to haunt my stomach. And again there items were stupendous. After all there awesome items again it was our turn to perform. Once we got up to the stage and we said our Tauloto. Ioane 21 Faiupu 25, Ua fetalai atu Iesu ia te ia, o au nei ole toetu male ola, ole faatuatua mai ia te au, e ui lava ina oti, ae ola lava ia. After our tauloto we sang a song called E lou Tama e. This was emotional for my siblings so they burst into tears like a volcano irrupting tears. I was the only one that didn't cry because I’m the man. Once we finished we drove home exhausted. Once we got home to my lovable family they made us and cousins a truck load of food. The food smelt nice, it looked nice, it felt nice when I took a huge chunk of and I swallowed it like a monster swallowing a building, I heard my stomach rumbling for some more food. Once I finished I told the lord thank you for the food and this day. I also said thanks to my lovable and kind aunt and mum for the lovely food. By: Pele lilo
One day I went to by the car to school and my teacher gave me a difficult work. I tried to be a smart guy but it was worst . I think that I’m going to tell my teacher this work is too difficult for me, but it’s not easy to tell her. what did I do? I tried so well and never gave up on my work. It was too difficult for me, but I think that if I wanted to be a smart guy I would try my best and never give up. My teacher said,go home with me and do it for a homework. I wanted to cheat. I wanted to ask my mom what the answer for my homework .But I also wanted to be a smart guy. I knew that I can’t learn if my mom tells me the answer. My stubbornness to finish my work was getting better and then, YAYYYYYY!!!!! I better got an A for my work. I want to be smart like my teacher, and I was as happy as Santa. I know that I’m a smart guy when I try..
I threw my head off the pillows, got up, yawned like a drunk Dinosaur and getting ready for a new day. I never checked my calendar, I didn't remember what the teacher announced Yesterday, not knowing that today was the day...to run in Cross Country. I got so scared that I asked my mother to me make skip School. Of course she said "No." So I had no choice but to go. The worst thing was I forgot my water bottle! I was thirsty already and kept repeating myself to my mom "Turn back! Turn back! Turn back!". After I got out of the car, I was shaking like a Phone vibrating. I walked slowly to School and thinking about the things that might happen like failing the race and letting my class down. I walked inside my classroom and everyone else were scared as well. Everyone was talking about me right when I walked in. About me winning the race. I didn't believe them. Now we are lining up and walking to the field and people were writing Letters on our wrists. We all sat down on the floor watching Mr Dawson calling out to the juniors. Moments later after the Juniors, its was time for the Seniors, the year 6 boys. I walked slowly to the field and I heard mean voices in my head, "You can't do it.", "You'll never win.", "you failed me, you disappoint me.". I thought what they said was true. I was on the line, waiting for the clap. What I felt was my lungs bouncing on my stomach, I almost felt sick already. We all stood there ready..."set..."...CLAP! I ran as fast as I could like that clapping sound was a gunshot from behind. I heard the voices again, but the cheering was louder than the voices in my head, so I ignored the mean voices. I kept pushing my feet off the ground until I made it in 1st place. My thigh was really sore after that race, but still had a glad mood. Now that tells me that I should never give up and I will never follow the paths that leads to failure.
gagana samoa alagaupu E pala maa,ae le pala upu. Even stones erode but words never decay. my dad said that it means e galo mea leaga,ae le galo mea lelei. my mum said that is was really e pala maa,ae le pala le tala. i thought that it meant if some thing went wrong that there was always a bright side to it. the advice that this alagaupu is giving - what you say to a person can hurt them. -words can ruin ones reputation. -words can stick rumors. -words,stories can live for ever.how? it can be passed on (traditions, legends, rumors.) -words are powerful. -think before you speak.
Malo Anita, thanks for sharing your understanding of our alagaupu/proverb. Remember, to comment on our alagaupu in our 'Samoa lo'u atunuu pele' section.

Not too long ago on the first of January we/I had to do a testimony. (This is every first Sunday though.)So I had to get up at 10am then do a testimony on stage. (With about 50/80 people at church.)I went up to the starting first but with no doubt in my mind that I was going to faint, but my poor cousins had ants in their pants, but who also went up to do their speech no matter how fearful they were. It went well the first time because I didn't muck up my words up but then I just blanked out. Everything went quiet when I went on stage. So it began the silence of shyness. (It really freaked me out).I finished it so fast I didn’t even know what I said,I just went with the flow.I was so proud of myself(my mum was to) So now I’m not as scared as before I love doing testimony’s now.
October 2015, the month of white Sunday. The month where every child is excited to get new shoes and get dolled up. Just for one special day. This is similar to how we have mother’s day and father day (all happy for just one day). Every child of each family except me! Why because I couldn’t find the effort to learn my versa. I was involved in a skit and we had to practice every day. With joy each and every day I had attended practice knowing that the effort I had was at about 25%.Slowly but surely i practiced one day at a time. I had found perseverance in me and i found that the effort had kicked in knowing i had a long part to learn i committed myself in learning my verse (Tauloto). PERSEVERANCE is all about not giving up .Effort that was needed by me to participate in doing my part. I knew it was hard but i did not give up. At the end of the day i had learned that having perseverance is important in MOMENTS LIKE THIS!
They sure were 'make or break' times. I remember those days too. OMG, the pressure of having all those eyes on you... well done for persevering and thanks for sharing this with us.
“Liu move over I need a shower.” “Pele its almost time to go.” “MUUUUUM I need your help to put my dress on.” “Many stressful weeks of rehearsal.” “What am I going to wear?”
VROOOOM during the ride we had a small practice. I felt bees sting my insides and it felt as if my clothes were drenched in water I was nervous that something might happen , I would have a break down or I might vomit in front of the audience
“E lou tamae ua faafetai …” One tear, two tear, multiple tears came down my face, my knees were weak my face turned bright red like a baboons glute but I was determined to finish what I started I sang with my whole heart for the lafo ga ipu. A lafo ga ipu Is a tribute to must loved family member for me it was my beautiful grandpa who recently passed away.
"Ia mauia le aso Sa o Tamaiti". Walking down with so much pride on my families faces made me feel like I did an amazing job , my brother also did a phenomenal job during our performance I wasn’t on proud of my brothers but I was proud of my whole family who took part in our performance when we all finished we all celebrated with … ICE CREAM BY:Nele
You have used some effective figurative language in this personal writing piece Nele that really gave me a clear picture of what you experienced. I especially loved the simile 'as if my clothes were drenched in water' and 'One tear, two tears, multiple tears...' - very effective!
Have you ever needed to take medicine even when you don’t want to? Well I have. Not so long ago I had a sore throat, so I needed to visit the doctor. We spoke a bit and they declared I had a throat infection, so they gave me some medicine. As soon as we got home I was forced to take my medicine. As I pour it out a white, chunky, milky like substance plots right into the medicine cup. Ewwwwwww! I thought to myself. I took one sniff and gaged, it smelt like vomit and excretion combined. I was horrified. I felt like my nose was going to disintegrate. But my determination did not let me down. I placed my fingers around my nose and squeezed tight, so tight it could pop… Chug! Not even tasting it, I feel the medicine rush down my throat with the best feeling of relief. Finally its done. By:Hope Betham
I have learnt that the most animals were extinct were killed by humans and died because of pollution and that humans destroyed there habitats to make car parks and buildings.

About a year ago I decided to sign up for netball. I loved netball and I also loved challenging other schools around Manurewa. Every year I would sign up for netball, I would be in a new team with new people. But in twenty sixteen their were just girls and only one boy in our team. It was fun until it came up to training- every week on Wednesdays, Mondays and also Fridays. Training was okay but training three times a week arrrrgh!!! No way! I thought to myself if I want to be in the netball team. I've got to commit myself to go training on those three days. But after training I would get cramps in my legs and my feet would feel like ants crawling all over my feet and toes. After training I had to walk back home and the pain in my body would get really score than before, so I wanted to not go to training anymore because sometimes I'd get really sick and I wouldn't be able to go training or go to my netball games on Saturday. After getting healed from my sickness I went back to training I wanted to give up. So then I decided to go training on all those three days. Netball season was over and then i told myself i did it and we ended up coming first!!! Out of all the netball schools we had challenged threw out this year hoary!!!
this term room 2 have learnt in kiwi can that there are other ways to communicate like talking,signs,...etc this helped my class to work together and to communicate with each other.
Haast eagles were one of the largest eagles ever. They were very heavy and the weighed 13 kilograms. Their claws were as much as 9 cm long making them as large as a tigers claw. Haast eagles had very strong legs and talons which indicates that it was an effective and active predator.
The haast eagle became extinct around the 1400s. It was about a hundred years before the moa became extinct. The haast eagle became extinct when the humans hunted the South island moa birds. They hunted the moa birds so much that there wasn't enough food for the haast eagle. The haast eagle had starved and had no more moa birds to eat, all because of the humans.
P1: Have you ever heard of a giant eagle which was the largest bird ever known. This bird was named after a scientist name Julius Von Haast. The haast eagle weighed up to 14 kilograms. It had sharp talon(claws) it could penetrate the moa pelvis bone. By:john
P2: IT is funny that the haast eagle camped with their food until their food is finised. They had to stand on top of trees because they couldn't fly that long to look for food. When humans arrived in NZ the haast eagles food waws dwindled because the people had to hunt the moa for food. That why the haast eagle extinct no food.
OMG when my eyes layed upon the calendar I knew the day was here- Thursday the 1st of June 2017 Samoan independence day. So many things were orbiting my mind saying “will they like it? Will the enjoy it? Will the hate it? ”. I was so clueless.
Mrs Lokeni was treating us like slaves assigning all of us to a job. As we were full with adrenaline and our didn’t complain one word. Why? Because we were afraid of what might happen when Mrs Lokeni found out. Staying after school hours was exhausting and going to school the next day everything was drained out of my body. It was like I was a sponge being squeezed constantly, leaving me without energy. But I was dedicated.
Hard work and heavy lifting paid off because the expo was a huge success teachers and students enjoyed learning about our culture at the expo. They observed our parent show casing the way we do things in Samoa I even heard the parents who ran the expo enjoyed the attention from the students.
The determination and dedication boiled down to this day, Samoan independence day . I felt a rush of adrenaline rushing through my vain, ready to show the audience what we worked on for the last 2 months. As we started singing I felt as if I was in the war and this was the last moment to show my brawniness to the school. As we were all up Hope B and john came up and addressed the school what day it was. “TOTOLO MAI TOTOLO MAIL” “SHOO SHOO SHOO” “SAUNI” room 4 and 3 were up. During the I see Pauls mum come up and dance with him this made me feel overjoyed because if a 6 or 7 year old can dance without any nervous thoughts so can I. Room 5 was next and then it was room 2. When they started my eyes were shocked because their performance was jaw dropping and they didn’t have one mess up. Now it was room2s turn I was shaking from my head to my toes but when I was in position I was locked and loaned ready to shoot at them with my awesome dance moves. I could see my mum and dad proud of me dancing.
On Thursday June the 2nd we had an excursion down to Rowandale primary school to celebrate Samoan independence day because they came to celebrate with our school. Through out the walk I hear so many conversations from my class mates saying I’m nervous, I’m going to freeze up there, I’m not scared but me I was panicky and breathless because we were a bit older than their school and there were unfamiliar faces. When our name was called out I was you could hear teeth chattering. When the music started everything was silent the only thing you could hear was the song and people from our class saying “CHEE HOOOO” throughout the whole dance, when we had to stand up I was breathless I even think I stopped breathing for like 30 seconds during the dance. At the end we had a lovely feed prepared by rowandale school what we ate was chicken, chop sui, fa”I, rice, and pani keke. When it was time to go we said our last goodbyes to rowandale primary school I was thankful that I got to go with my teacher and my class.
The first of June 2017 was Samoan Independence day. Today was the day that we celebrated Samoa's 55th Independence and to remember those who fought for Samoa's Independence, thus making Samoa a free country.
It was one week before it was Samoan language week, it was a very busy week for Tautua Mo Tupulaga. Rooms 3, 4, 5 and 2 had to practise their dance, everyone had to practise smiling and everyone had to make sure they were looking at their hands while they were dancing. Everyone practised and worked very hard to keep their dance tremendous, and all that practise was worth it because all of our dances were marvellous on Samoan Independence day. It was still busy in room2 because we were doing our Samoan research for the Saman expo. We all researched about Samoan things like: Traditional Samoan tattoos, Samoan necklaces etc... Everyone was working extremely hard to finish the Samoan research that was given to us, but after many hours we all managed to finish before school had finished.
On the 30th of May Tupulaga had a phenomenal expo, to show everyone our beautiful culture- Samoa. The expo was featured Samoan things like: How to valu the popo, How the laufala was prepared and many more.It was wonderful to see our TMT parents come in and help us with the expo stations. After preparing the expo many classes came in the hall and had a glimpse at our amazing master pieces. Many students had gotten an opportunity to do some fun activities like: Valuing the popo, How to print Samoan designs on an ie, taste testing the taro and etc... After the first block of school it was now time for Morning, the parents had morning tea which was coco rice, sausage rolls bread and many more delicious food, after morning tea other classes came in the expo. A Lot of people seemed to have fun at TMT is expo, our expo was an epic success.
Waking up in the morning filled with happiness, joy and excitement today was the big day, today was Samoan Independence day!!! WOOHOO!! After jumping up and down the bed i decided it was time to to get ready for Samoan Independence day. After i got ready i dashed to school and i saw everyone who looked all very stunning.I also saw chairs, mats and I also saw the stage that was covered by the ie tonga.Later on it was time for TMT the samoan kids and rowandale primary school to perform the march, we performed the march so that we could remember all of those people who fought for Samoa's Independence. After the march John and Hope B greeted everyone and thanked them for participating in our Samoan celebration. Later on it was time to welcome our brothers and sisters from Rowandale School, we all said "Talofa Lava Rowandale" After that it was time for some entertainment.
The first rooms to perform was rooms 3 and 4, their dance was awesome because they were smiling and singing the song they were performing to.Next item was room 5, I loved the beat of the sasa was going too, and it was cool to see them having fun. After room 5 it was time for my class ( room 2) to perform, it was extraordinary to see so many people looking at us perform. While we were performing the girls and boys from our classroom said "CHEE HOO" so confidently.
It was the 2 of June 2017, today was the day we go to Rowandale Primary School. When I arrived at school we did our lotu, after lotu we practised our dance again and again because we were going to Rowandale School. When the morning tea bell went room2 had to line up outside room 1 to get ready to walk to Rowandale School. When we arrived at Rowandale School we sat in the front so we could see all the beautiful performances, when it was time for us to perform we got up, went to the stage and performed and I thought we did very well. After all their performances we went and ate the food that had been prepared by Rowandale School, we ate chop sui, chicken, fai, rice and panikeke, after we ate we said goodbye to Rowandale School and said goodbye to Mrs Faavale and Miss Manuele ( our old teachers). We all went to school.
It was a cold and a foggy morning on May 29 2017 which meant I had to stretch out of bed and wear a beautiful ofu so that I could face the busiest week of my life. We had some awesome preparation leading up to this week. I was so overjoy because we got to celebrate Samoan language week to remembered those who fought for Samoan those many years ago.
On Tuesday, T.M.T had a awesome expo to showed everyone that our culture is so wonderful. We had a lot of parents that came in and run the expo. We had a lot of classes that came in the hall one by one. We had such amazing support from our neighbouring school Rowandale Primary who were also invited to our Samoan expo. We had T.W.A, Manulua, and T.M.T teachers and our lovely principal who all came in the hall and explore our Samoan culture display. There were a lot of stations in the hall which was: 'the taro station, ie toga station...etc. The classes enjoyed their time in the hall. They tasted new food and said things like: "This food is so nice."
On Wednesday we had time to prepared for Thursday which was our big day. In the morning we had a lotu and then we started practicing our siva and our dances. After our class practice, we had T.M.T practice. We first sang 'e lo'u tama' then the national anthem of Samoa. After our T.M.T practice, rest of Samoans from our school came down and started practicing our marching, which every Samoan people does to remembered those who fought for Samoa. Then we practice the MC's, bible reading people, and the prayers to come on the stage and say their parts out loud.
Our big day was on June 1 ,2017 which was the Samoan Independence day . In the morning at 7:00 am a lot of us were here at school was helping out the teachers for setting up the court for our performance. It was time for marching, when we walked my heart was beating like a blink of an eye. After the marching all the parents and staff were waiting on the chairs for T.M.T'S performance. John and Hope which was our MC's went up o the stage and greets all the parents friends and families and thank them for participating the celebration for all Samoan around the world. Now it's the favorite part of the celebration, the performance. First performance was room 3 and 4, then room 5 and room 2. Last performance was the Staff Samoan group. After all of the celebration, all the parents and Rowandale Primary went to room 2 and 3 for morning tea. It was time for room 2 and 5 to eat. After we ate, our lovely Mrs. Lokeni said a huge " Thankx " to all of us for participating our big day. That was our busiest and enjoyable week....

I try my best to eat it, I never give up, I try harder. You know what happened next??yayyyy... I finish all my veges. BY:JOHN CRICHTON
ReplyDeleteGood job John i love the way you use onomatopoeia
DeleteMalo John, you used a really descriptive metaphor - "forest of vegetables". This metaphor really gave me a clear picture as to what your chowmein looked like. Fantastic metaphor!! I bet your body is thanking you for the forest of veges you ate :)
DeleteIt was the summer of 2016 on a Sunday but it wasn't just any ordinary Sunday it was a Sunday that you, yes, you, had to sing, dance, and say bible verses.
ReplyDeleteIt all started when I woke up on that day then my parents reminded me it was lotutamaiti dun Dun DUN!!!!.

DeleteI threw my head off the pillows, got up, yawned like a drunk Dinosaur and getting ready for a new day.

DeleteOn Friday the 9th of September 2016 it was a huge day for me. It was
ReplyDeletethe speech finals. I was quite shy but i just did it to show the whole school that i have courage to stand up for myself,my family and most of all my unit tautua mo tupulaga. So what i saw with my own eyes was the whole school the teachers and the judge Mr Lysaght.
I was filled with joy. When i went up stage i felt brave and nervous
at the same time. I took a huge breath and delivered my speech and
it went amazingly well when i finished my speech, every one sarted
to clap at me. I walked off overuhelmed that it was over. When all of the speeches were finished, it was time to call out the winners
for the speech finals. I came 2nd place. YES!!!

DeleteNot too long ago on the first of January we/I had to do a testimony. (It really freaked me out).I finished it so fast I didn’t even know what I said,I just went with the flow.I was so proud of myself(my mum was to) So now I’m not as scared as before
ReplyDeleteI love doing testimony’s now.

DeleteOctober 2015, the month of white Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThey sure were 'make or break' times. I remember those days too. OMG, the pressure of having all those eyes on you... well done for persevering and thanks for sharing this with us.

A lafo ga ipu Is a tribute to must loved family member for me it was my beautiful grandpa who recently passed away.
"Ia mauia le aso Sa o Tamaiti".
Walking down with so much pride on my families faces made me feel like I did an amazing job , my brother also did a phenomenal job during our performance I wasn’t on proud of my brothers but I was proud of my whole family who took part in our performance when we all finished we all celebrated with … ICE CREAM

You have used some effective figurative language in this personal writing piece Nele that really gave me a clear picture of what you experienced. I especially loved the simile 'as if my clothes were drenched in water' and 'One tear, two tears, multiple tears...' - very effective!
DeleteHave you ever needed to take medicine even when you don’t want to?

Haast eagles were one of the largest eagles ever. They were very heavy and the weighed 13 kilograms. Their claws were as much as 9 cm long making them as large as a tigers claw. Haast eagles had very strong legs and talons which indicates that it was an effective and active predator.
ReplyDeleteThe haast eagle became extinct around the 1400s. It was about a hundred years before the moa became extinct. The haast eagle became extinct when the humans hunted the South island moa birds. They hunted the moa birds so much that there wasn't enough food for the haast eagle. The haast eagle had starved and had no more moa birds to eat, all because of the humans.
By: Luina Luatutu
Well done Luina.
DeleteP1: Have you ever heard of a giant eagle which was the largest bird ever known. This bird was named after a scientist name Julius Von Haast. The haast eagle weighed up to 14 kilograms. It had sharp talon(claws) it could penetrate the moa pelvis bone.
ReplyDeleteBy:john
P2: IT is funny that the haast eagle camped with their food until their food is finised. They had to stand on top of trees because they couldn't fly that long to look for food. When humans arrived in NZ the haast eagles food waws dwindled because the people had to hunt the moa for food. That why the haast eagle extinct no food.
OMG when my eyes layed upon the calendar I knew the day was here- Thursday the 1st of June 2017 Samoan independence day. So many things were orbiting my mind saying “will they like it? Will the enjoy it? Will the hate it? ”. I was so clueless.
ReplyDeleteMrs Lokeni was treating us like slaves assigning all of us to a job.

ReplyDeleteIt was one week before it was Samoan language week, it was a very busy week for Tautua Mo Tupulaga.

ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday, T.M.T had a awesome expo to showed everyone that our culture is so wonderful.
